3rd Sunday of Advent

The third week of Advent is a time to remember with great joy the good news of Jesus’ birth. 

It is a joy that does not depend on what is going on in our life, in the world, or among the people we are with. It doesn’t depend on the gifts we give or the gifts we find under the tree. Our joy comes from the Lord. It is the same joy that flooded the hearts of the shepherds, the angels, the wise men, the hosts of heaven, and Mary and Joseph. It is a joy that still has the power to overwhelm our hearts with rejoicing.

Those who gathered around the new born child were blessed because they believed that the promise made by the Lord had been fulfilled. Mary and Joseph believed and were able to feel the joy of holding baby Jesus in their arms. The shepherds and wise men believed the angels and the signs and experienced the great gladness of worshipping their Messiah.

They trusted in the Lord’s promises and their hearts were filled with gladness as they watched God’s loving-kindness manifested in the face of a tiny baby in a lowly manger.

May we experience something of that same joy and happiness this Christmas.

Advent Café

Thanks to those who returned to our Advent Café last Wednesday. Our “customers”  left with a desire to seek something of the peace of Advent amidst the present turmoil of life.

The Cafe will be open again this coming Wednesday at 6pm in St. Patrick’s parish centre.

……….offering a chance to explore the Advent theme of “Joy” – something that we may feel is eluding us at present – while praying, chatting, drinking coffee and eating cake!

The aim of the evening is to discover ways in which we, as a Catholic family can make the “Joy of Advent” a reality for someone, somewhere this Christmas.

All are welcome and admission to a warm, friendly environment is free.

Heavenly Father, thank you for the joy that entered the world when Jesus was born, when you became God with us. Enrich our lives and enable us to live joyfully in those difficult or busy moments. Help us to recognise your presence among us and fill our hearts with renewed strength, courage, hope and joy. Amen.

An Advent prayer of Peace

Lord, in a season when every heart should be happy and light, many are struggling with the burdens of life. We need your peace, O Lord. Our hearts are too often filled with wondering how the bills will be paid, when the terror will stop, when rest will come.  In a world where worry, not peace, prevails, stir up the good news again, make it real in our hearts for we live at a time when we need your peace more than ever. Amen

An Advent prayer of Hope

God of Hope, we seek you. During this holy season of Advent, help us to see you in all whom we encounter. May your hope be a comfort to all who long for justice. May your hope fill our hearts and grace our lips so that we might reflect your hope for all the world. Amen

Merciful God, we entrust to your loving care those who are ill or in pain. Comfort and heal them, and restore them to full health and strength. Grant perseverance and resilience to all who are caring for the sick, empower them with your Spirit, so that through their care many will be restored to health; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

A Prayer for Ukraine

Loving God, we pray for the people of Ukraine, for all those suffering or afraid, that you will be close to them and protect them. We pray for world leaders, for compassion, strength and wisdom to guide their choices. We pray for the world that in this moment of crisis, we may reach out in solidarity to our brothers and sisters in need. May we walk in your ways so that peace and justice become a reality for the people of Ukraine and for the whole world. Amen

Everyone is welcome to join us for the celebration of Mass in St. Patrick’s and St. Alban’s churches. In recent times, it has been a joy to welcome people of other faiths or none who have come to join us in worship.

Currently, only baptised Catholic people are able to receive Holy Communion and we ask that when you approach the altar you extend your hands towards the minister who will place the sacred host in your hand which you should then consume immediately before returning to your place.

If you are not a Catholic or are indisposed to receive Holy Communion, you are invited to come forward at the appropriate time and receive a blessing, indicating your desire by folding an arm across your chest.

Refreshments after Mass

Enjoy each others company in a warm and friendly setting with tasty refreshments in St. Patrick’s parish centre after Mass this Sunday.

If you are feeling unwell or have any cold, flu or Covid symptons, particularly a persistent cough, you should consider staying at home rather than coming to church.

Mass on Tuesday and Thursday at St. Patrick’s

In an effort to manage our heating costs, Mass on Tuesday and Thursday will be celebrated in St. Patrick’s parish centre at 10am. Refreshments will be served after Mass on Tuesday. Entry will be by the parish centre doors only. Parking is available in the main church car park.

St. Alban’s Review

When Fr. Patterson met with Bishop Robert earlier in the year, the Bishop agreed that although the level of support offered by parishioners was far from what was hoped for, Fr. Patterson could proceed with the reopening of St. Alban’s churchfor a Saturday Vigil Mass only, to assess the level of need and support. The Bishop asked Fr. Patterson to review the situation after the summer.

Bishop Robert had arranged to meet with Fr, Patterson for this review on 1st December, but because the Bishop has  been advised to take some medical leave from the Diocese, the meeting was postponed. It will be rescheduled once the Bishop returns. In the meantime, Fr. Patterson will continue to celebrate a vigil Mass in St. Alban’s church on Saturdays at 6pm.

Gateshead Covid update

67 new Covid cases in the seven days up to 3rd December which is a decrease of 11 from the previous 7 days;  3 people died in the same period, which is a increase of 2 from the previous 7 days; 41 patients with Covid were in the QE Hospital on 7th December.

According to the Office for National statistics 1 in 60 people currently have Covid in the UK.

Advent Alms

During Advent, St Cuthbert’s Care call upon the generosity of the people of our Diocese to help raise funds to purchase a newer minibus for their two nursing homes. Your support will allow them to offer more regular outings throughout the year, ensuring their residents’ lives remain as varied as possible. They appreciate this winter will be difficult for many and urge you only to support them if you are able to do so. Should you wish to support their appeal, place your offering in an envelope marked “Advent Alms” and place it in one of the boxes at the entrance to our churches. Offerings are welcome throughout the four weeks of Advent.

As Christmas approaches are you able to support our Diocesan Justice and Peace Refugee Project?

When doing your own shopping for Christmas, please spare a thought for the above project. It supports over 400 clients each week, who all receive a bag of food.  Those who are destitute also receive a supermarket voucher.

Donations of sugar, biscuits, tinned fish in oil, tins of tomatoes and chick peas may be left on the table to your right as you enter the front of St. Patrick’s Church or on any table if you enter by the rear door. A basket is also available in the porch at St. Alban’s Church and in our school. They are particularly in need of toiletries and shampoo. Please note: baked beans and tinned meat are not required.

Advent services of prayer

Our children in Years 5 & 6 will lead the school family in prayer over the last two weeks in Advent. They will reflect on the Sunday Gospel, rejoicing and getting ready to welcome Jesus into their homes this Christmas.

Christmas fair

The Friends of St Alban’s raised over £1000.00 for our children at the Christmas Fair. Many thanks to everyone who contributed and supported us.

Christmas nativity

Our youngest children will be sharing the Christmas Story with families and friends this week, using drama, dance and song. They have been rehearsing with great concentration and determination, sorting out costumes and props, and are now ready to perform.

Companies spend considerable sums of money in branding their products in the hope that they will attract our attention and convince us that we really need whatever it is they are selling – often persuading us to part with considerable sums of money and convincing our friends and colleagues to do the same!

When it comes to John the Baptist, of whom we hear in the gospel read in our churches this weekend, his brand – his message – was a forceful and uncompromising one. Yet despite John’s gruffness and outspoken honesty, he was a popular figure, drawing crowds from, “Jerusalem, Judaea and the whole Jordan district.” Not only that, but an amazing cross section of society came to hear him.

His focus was on hypocrisy, pride, honesty and fairness.

When the day came for John to proclaim Jesus as the ‘Chosen One’ he did not shirk his responsibility.

The lifestyles of John and Jesus could hardly have been more different.

In the person of John, we meet the person chosen by God to introduce Jesus to the world and his message is as relevant now as it was then: “Repent because the Kingdom of God is near,” only then will we discover Jesus.

Advent 2022

The Advent booklet “Walk with me,” has now arrived having been delayed by the Royal Mail industrial action. It contains a journey of prayer for Advent and is priced at £1.00. They are especially for those parishioners who do not have access to resources provided on the internet.

The Diocesan Vicariate for Faith & Mission have produced a series of reflections on the readings used throughout the Advent season. The reflections have been written by members of the Diocese. Advent services of prayer

Our children in Years 3-6 are helping us journey through Advent in prayer in preparation for Christmas. The school community gather in school around the Advent Wreath, with parents, to listen to the Gospel and pray together.

Christmas fair

A date for your diary! Our school Christmas Fair will be held in school from 3.05pm on Thursday, 8^th December. All profits will go to school funds. The PTA group, called the Friends of St Alban’s, are always looking for more helpers to give their time, talents and expertise. Open the book

Open the Book (OtB) offers primary school children an opportunity to hear key Bible stories during 10-15 minute assemblies. A keen group of parishioners established our group just before lockdown and are now seeking new members to join the team. If you are interested, please email m.robinson@stalbansgateshead.org This is a perfect way to bring our parish and school family together and share bible stories with each other.

Little Saints

Families with pre-school age children are invited to join our Toddler Group called “Little Saints,” which meets every Thursday morning in St Alban’s school from 9.30am – 11.00am. All are welcome!

Clothes bank

Our school invite you to recycle, through their clothes bank, any unwanted clothing, shoes, bags, belts and accessories. Simply bring your items to the school and place In doing so, you will be helping to raise money for our school and saving UK landfills too. ….by Westoe Brass Band, The Diocesan Choir and Ensembles from St Joseph’s Academy, Hebburn are to be held on Friday, 9th December at 19.30 in St Joseph’s Church, Gateshead. Tickets are £10/£8 and only available at the door. Admission for under 18s is free. Cash and card payments are accepted. Refreshments during the interval.

1^st Sunday of Advent

The season of Advent, which begins this Sunday, is an opportunity to rediscover wonder and surprise in our tired and overstimulated lives.

Children can teach us many lessons during Advent. They are full of natural excitement and exuberance as they look towards the birth of Jesus at Christmas.

In the gospel read in our churches this Sunday, Jesus warns us to: “Stay awake.” It is an important message for us living in the world of today because if we become complacent in our life as a Christian, our faith can become lukewarm.

Advent provides an opportunity to reassess our priorities and live with eyes open to wonder and the gifts we see around us. It is a good time to appreciate and thank those we love for their presence and place in our lives.

Advent is also a time of waiting in hope. The old will pass away and so we hope that Christ will break again into our lives to bring his gift of peace, for which so many people long today.

For many families the busyness of the pre-Christmas season is a challenge to making the most of Advent. In contrast to this whirlwind of busyness, Advent is an opportunity to give some time to prayer and to reflect on the gifts that we have been given. A period of reflection can open our eyes to the wonderful gifts around us and lead us to truly praise God this Christmas.

God of Hope, we seek you. During this holy season of Advent, help us to see you in all whom we encounter. May your hope be a comfort to all who long for justice. May your hope fill our hearts and grace our lips so that we might reflect your hope for all the world. Amen

Merciful God, we entrust to your loving care those who are ill or in pain. Comfort and heal them, and restore them to full health and strength. Everyone is welcome to join us for the celebration of Mass in St. Patrick’s and St. Alban’s churches. In recent times, it has been a joy to welcome people of other faiths or none who have come to join us in worship.

Currently, only baptised Catholic people are able to receive Holy Communion and we ask that when you approach the altar you extend your hands towards the minister who will place the sacred host in your hand which you should then consume immediately before returning to your place.

If you are not a Catholic or are indisposed to receive Holy Communion, you are invited to come forward at the appropriate time and receive a blessing, indicating your desire by folding an arm across your chest.

Enjoy each others company in a warm and friendly setting with tasty refreshments in St. Patrick’s parish centre after Mass this Sunday.

Mass on Tuesday and Thursday at St. Patrick’s

In an effort to manage our heating costs, Mass on Tuesday and Thursday will be celebrated in St. Patrick’s parish centre at 10am. Entry will be by the parish centre doors only. Parking is available in the main church car park.

These are difficult times for everyone as the cost of living and energy costs are starting to impact on us, our parishes included. Fr. Patterson wishes to express his gratitude for your generous weekly contributions to parish funds enabling us to pay our bills.

Please help to boost the income of both of our churches by Gift Aiding your weekly offering if you are a tax payer. It costs you nothing more than you already give to the church, but we are able to claim from HMRC 25p of every £1.00 you are already giving. All that is required is that you sign a simple form providing the Diocese with your name and address and they do the rest for us. You do not have to declare anything about your personal financial situation on the form.

The Diocesan Vicariate for Faith & Mission have produced a series of reflections on the readings used throughout the Advent season. The reflections have been written by members of the Diocese and offer an opportunity to pause and reflect. The first and second week of Advent reflections can be downloaded from the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle website. The second part of the Advent reflections will be available shortly.

Priestly Vocations Discernment Evening

The next Discernment evening for those who may feel they have a vocation to the priestly life, will take place at St. Mary’s  Cathedral on Tuesday, 6th December at 6pm.

Advent Alms

This Advent, St Cuthbert’s Care call upon the generosity of the people of our Diocese to help raise funds to purchase a newer minibus for their two nursing homes. Your support will allow them to offer more regular outings throughout the year, ensuring their residents’ lives remain as varied as possible. They appreciate this winter will be difficult for many and urge you only to support them if you are able to do so. Should you wish to support their appeal, place your offering in an envelope marked “Advent Alms” and place it one of the boxes at the entrance to our churches. Alternatively, if you have a box of envelopes, you should have an envelope in your box. Offerings are welcome throughout the four weeks of Advent.

As Christmas approaches are you able to support our Diocesan Justice and Peace Refugee Project?

When doing your own shopping for Christmas, please spare a thought for the above project. It supports over 400 clients each week, who all receive a bag of food.  Those who are destitute also receive a supermarket voucher.

Donations of sugar, biscuits, tinned fish in oil, tins of tomatoes and chick peas may be left on the table to your right as you enter the front of St. Patrick’s Church or on any table if you enter by the rear door. A basket is also available in the porch at St. Alban’s Church and in our school. They are particularly in need of toiletries and shampoo. Please note: baked beans and tinned meat are not required.

St. Alban’s room is ventilated, but if you wish to wear a face covering you are welcome to do so.

Vandalism

St. Patrick’s Church suffered some vandalism last Saturday evening at approximately 7pm when lead was stripped off the sacristy roof which resulted in the damage of a considerable number of roof slates. Temporary repairs have been made to prevent the ingress of water into the sacristy and Fr. Patterson is in the process of obtaining estimates for the cost of the repairs.

When passing either of our churches, please keep an eye out for anything or anyone who may appear to be acting in a suspicious manner and let us know, but please do not do anything that would put yourself at risk.

33rd Sunday of the Year

Remembrance Sunday is an opportunity for us as a nation to remember the service and sacrifice of all those who defended our freedom and protected our way of life. We remember the Armed Forces and their families, from Britain and the Commonwealth, the vital role played by the emergency services and those who have lost their lives as a result of conflict or terrorism.

The poppy has become a symbol of Remembrance and hope for a positive future and peaceful world. In the spring of 1915, shortly after losing a friend in Ypres, a Canadian doctor, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae wrote his now famous poem after seeing poppies growing in battle-scarred fields.

In Flanders’ fields the poppies blow between the crosses, row on row, that mark our place:
and in the sky the larks, still bravely singing, fly scarce heard amid the guns elow.

We are the dead. Short days ago we lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders’ fields.

The Newman Association

The next meeting of the Tyneside Circle of the Newman Association is on Wednesday, 30th November at 7.30pm in the church hall at St. Cuthbert’s, North Shields, when Bernard Robinson will give a talk entitled “‘All will be Saved’ – Eventually: The Universal Salvation Debate”.  All are welcome to attend.

Priestly Vocations Discernment Evening

The next Discernment evening for those who may feel they have a vocation to the priestly life, will take place at St. Mary’s  Cathedral on Tuesday, 6th December at 6pm. Bishop Robert will be attending the evening which is the last gathering before the Christmas holiday.

Gateshead Covid update

140 new Covid cases in the seven days up to 7th November which is an increase of 11 from the previous 7 days;  2 people have died in the same period, which is a decrease of 6 from the previous 7 days. 66 patients with Covid were in the QE Hospital on 9th November.

The Lindisfarne Gospels

The Gospels are currently on display at the Laing Art Gallery until 3rd December, 2022, on loan from the British Library. The Lindisfarne Gospels has long been acclaimed as the most spectacular manuscript to survive from Anglo-Saxon England. Created on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, the book represents the golden age of design and craftsmanship in Northumbria and has survived in almost perfect condition for over one thousand years.  The exhibition includes an immersive digital experience and includes a selection of early medieval treasures brought together from across the UK.  You can find out more by visiting  the Laing Art Gallery Website.

Postage stamps

After 31 January, 2023, regular stamps without a barcode will no longer be valid. You can either use up these stamps before this deadline or swap them for the new barcoded ones. The barcodes will enable exciting new services by connecting physical stamps to the digital world through the Royal Mail app.

The stamps that are changing are the stamps that feature the profile of Her Late Majesty The Queen on a plain coloured background.

Your non-barcoded stamps can be exchanged for the new barcoded version through the Stamp Swap Out scheme. To swap out your stamps, simply complete one of our Stamp Swap Out forms and send it back to us along with your non-barcoded stamps. More information can be found on the Post Office website.

Could you help to offset the cost of printing paper copies of the Newsletter by having it sent to you by email? Many of you have been receiving it electronically throughout the pandemic and continue to do so. Dear Parishioners

November is that time of year when the Church invites us to pray for all those who have died.

As well as remembering our own family members, friends and parishioners, we might also pray for names we will never know and voices we have never heard in lands we may never visit, yet they are all our brothers and sisters.

Let us remember those parishioners whose deaths were made known to us during the past twelve months:-

Everyone is welcome to join us for the celebration of Mass in St. Patrick’s and St. Alban’s churches. In recent times, it has been a joy to welcome people of other faiths or none who have come to join us in worship.

Currently, only baptised Catholic people are able to receive Holy Communion and we ask that when you approach the altar you extend your hands towards the minister who will place the sacred host in your hand which you should then consume immediately before returning to your place.

If you are not a Catholic or are indisposed to receive Holy Communion, you are invited to come forward at the appropriate time and receive a blessing, indicating your desire by folding an arm across your chest.

St Alban’s Anniversary – A Mass of Thanksgiving – Wednesday, 9th November at 6pm

Wednesday of this coming week, 9th November, 2022 marks the 50th Anniversary of the opening of the current church of St. Alban at Pelaw by Bishop Lindsay. 

In what are still uncertain times for us, Fr. Patterson will celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving in St. Alban’s Church on Wednesday, 9th November at 6pm. You would be most welcome to be part of this act of Thanksgiving.

Mass in St Alban’s Room in our school

After consulting with Mrs Robinson, Fr. Patterson will be celebrating Mass on Wednesday, 16th November in St Alban’s Room in our school when parishioners will be able to join in prayer with some of our children. Details of how to gain access to the school for Mass will be announced shortly, as those attending must comply with the school’s safeguarding policy. Please do not attend if you are suffering from any Covid, cold or flu symptoms.

Holy Island Camp

Organisers of the Holy Island Camp urgently need volunteers. 

They have sent the following note:- “We cannot offer glamour but we can offer friendship and a worthwhile cause to help.  Term Time Camps take place between Easter and the Summer Holidays and then September and October. Commitment involves training, a DBS check and the choice of anything from a few days to a week helping on the beautiful island itself. 

We also need volunteers to work as part of a team of helpers to supervise and look after children, taking part in our weekly holidays over July and August.  Volunteers would help organise activities and supervise the care of the children, aged between 9 and 12.  Again, very little glamour and admittedly tiring, but so worthwhile! Commitment is for training, a DBS check and a week on the island.

St. Patrick’s Parent Toddler Group

Fr. Patterson has been approached by the Trustees of St. Patrick’s Parent Toddler Group and after discussion with them, it was agreed that it would not be possible for the group to reopen.

Prior to the lockdown, the group was struggling to provide the necessary level of volunteers to ensure the safe operation of the group and the number of children attending had also declined.

Fr. Patterson is grateful to those who established the group in 1996 and to those who have helped to run the group since then, providing a wonderful resource, not only for the parish, but for the local community too. Many of the toys amassed over the years have been gifted to local charities and to neighbouring groups.

Women’s Guild

Fr Patterson wishes to express his heartfelt thanks to Mary Laurie who has asked to step down as the organiser of the Women’s Guild after 66 years.  In recent times, the ageing process and health issues have meant that the membership of the group has declined considerably and after discussion with Mary, Fr Patterson has agreed that the Women’s Guild will be disbanded. The Guild and its members have, over the years, contributed so generously to the parish both socially and financially and Fr. Patterson acknowledges his gratitude for all they have contributed to the parish and local community.

We hope, in the months ahead, to be able to explore opportunities for parishioners from both of our churches to gather together in St. Patrick’s parish centre from time to time for a cup of tea and a chat—but we will need volunteers to facilitate this. The Diocesan Emmaus Bereavement Support Service

Whilst family and friends can be immensely supportive in coping with a bereavement, sometimes a bereaved person may wish to talk to someone outside of their immediate circle. The Emmaus Bereavement Support Team, trained in the Ministry of Consolation, is available to support those who wish to talk about their loss. As the post-Covid restrictions have eased, support can now be offered face to face. Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes, 2023

Are you interested in helping the Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes next year? The organisers need nurses, healthcare assistants, doctors and volunteers to provide care for assisted pilgrims who travel on the pilgrimage. Previous helpers have found the pilgrimage to be a rewarding and spiritually uplifting week.

It is a day when we are called to remember those who have died and to pray for their joyful reunion with their loving creator.

And so we pray to the Lord:

Lord, you raised your Son from the dead that all may share in his joyful resurrection. In Jesus’ name grant to them eternal rest and perpetual light in your presence

Bishop Robert will celebrate a Mass for the deceased clergy of our Diocese on Thursday, 3rd November at 12.05 at St Mary’s Cathedral. You would be welcome to attend.

 Flame Congress 4^th March, 2023

Flame 2023 will be the fifth Flame Congress and the first since the pandemic. The theme ‘Rise Up!’ reflects this hope – a time to stand up again, to find fresh strength, to help others to rise up, and to use the energy and gifts of young people in new ways.

Flame is for young people in Year 9 and above. Typically, there are large numbers of Year 10, Year 11, Sixth Form and University students.

Young people and responsible adult leaders who are DBS checked will be travelling in private carriages on 2 or possibly 3 consecutive scheduled trains stopping at Newcastle, Durham and Darlington. The cost is £40.00  per person whichincludes return rail travel, Wembley ticket and London travel card.

Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes, 2023

Are you interested in helping the Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes next year? The organisers need nurses, healthcare assistants, doctors and volunteers to provide care for assisted pilgrims who travel on the pilgrimage. Previous helpers have found the pilgrimage to be a rewarding and spiritually uplifting week.

 Are you able to support the Diocesan Refugee Project?

 The organisers of this project express their renewed thanks for your ongoing support of their work.  The project supports over 400 asylum seekers and tries to provide them all with a bag of food. Those who are destitute also receive a supermarket voucher. Donations of sugar, biscuits, tinned fish in oil, tins of tomatoes and chick peas may be left on the table to your right as you enter the front of St Patrick’s Church or on any table if you enter by the rear door. A basket is also available in the porch at St Alban’s. They are particularly in need of toiletries and shampoo. Please note: baked beans and tinned meat are not required.

The Lindisfarne Gospels

The Gospels are currently on display at the Laing Art Gallery until 3rd December, 2022, on loan from the British Library. The Lindisfarne Gospels has long been acclaimed as the most spectacular manuscript to survive from Anglo-Saxon England. Created on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, the book represents the golden age of design and craftsmanship in Northumbria and has survived in almost perfect condition for over one thousand years.  The exhibition includes an immersive digital experience and includes a selection of early medieval treasures brought together from across the UK.  You can find out more by visiting  the Laing Art Gallery Website.

30th Sunday of the year

Dear Parishioners

This Sunday, 23rd October, is World Mission Sunday, when Pope Francis invites all Catholic people to contribute to the work of “Missio,” his charity for world mission. If you feel able to support the work of Missio in helping missionaries to work alongside communities throughout the world that are poor or in need, regardless of their background or belief you may place an offering in one of the collection boxes at the entrances to our churches. Please mark you envelope Mission Sunday. Those of you who have a set of weekly offering envelopes should have a special envelope for today.

Pope Francis writes:- ‘You shall be my witnesses’ are words that lie at the heart of Jesus’ teaching to the disciples regarding their mission in the world. The disciples are to be witnesses of Jesus, in every place and situation, thanks to the grace of the Holy Spirit that they will receive. Christ was the first to be sent, as a ‘missionary’ of the Father (Jn 20:21), and as such, he is the Father’s ‘faithful witness’ (cf. Rev 1:5).

In a similar way, every Christian is called to be a missionary and witness to Christ. The Church’s only mission, as the community of Christ’s disciples, is to bring the Gospel to the entire world by bearing witness to Christ. Each baptised person is called to mission, in the Church and by the mandate of the Church: consequently, mission is carried out together, not individually, in communion with the ecclesial community.

Everyone is welcome to join us for the celebration of Mass in St. Patrick’s and St. Alban’s churches. In recent times, it has been a joy to welcome people of other faiths or none who have come to join us in worship.

Currently, only baptised Catholic people are able to receive Holy Communion and we ask that when you approach the altar you extend your hands towards the minister who will place the sacred host in your hand which you should then consume immediately before returning to your place.

If you are not a Catholic or are indisposed to receive Holy Communion, you are invited to come forward at the appropriate time and receive a blessing, indicating your desire by folding an arm across your chest.

 Might God be calling you to be a priest?

The Vocations Team extends an invitation to men aged 18+, who might be thinking about a vocation the the Priesthood, to an enquirers evening. The evenings will take place at the Cloister Cafe, St Mary’s Cathedral, Newcastle, on: Tuesday, 25th October, 2022 and Tuesday, 6th December, 2022. The evenings start at 6pm with a period of prayer, talk/discussion, followed by a meal together, finishing around 8pm. Gracious God, give skill, sympathy and resilience to all who are caring for the sick, and your wisdom to those searching for cures to the world’s illnesses. Strengthen them with your Spirit, that through their work many will be restored to health; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

A Prayer for Ukraine

Father, hold the people of Ukraine deep in your heart. Protect them from violence, political gamesmanship and from being used and abused. Give the nations of the world the courage and wisdom to stand up for justice and the courage to care generously. Take from us those traits that see us pursuing our own needs and wants before those of others. Teach us to live in love, dignity and respect, following your ways. We ask this in your name and for your sake. Amen

29th Sunday of the Year

Dear Parishioners

We live in a world that appears to offer us quick answers to our problems along with quick responses to our needs. Think of all of the “time saving” devices that surround us. With smart phones we can communicate with others anywhere in the world with the touch of a few buttons. Any number of products can be purchased on line, paid for with a credit card.

Amidst all of this, prayer and spending time with God can be an uphill battle. The world has shaped us into being impatient people. In the Gospel, read in our churches this weekend, we hear Jesus speaking of the woman who continually calls on the judge to hear and answer her petition.

St Paul, in the second reading, writing to Timothy explains why it is important to pray continually:- “You must keep to what you have been taught and know to be true. Ever since you were a child, you have known the scriptures – from these you can learn the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All scripture is inspired by God and can profitably be used for teaching, for refuting error, for guiding people’s lives and teaching them to be holy. This is how the person who is dedicated to God becomes fully equipped and ready for any good work.”

So when the Son of Man comes again, will he find any faith on earth?

 As Covid cases rise in Gateshead…

Some of you may have seen Alice Wiseman, the Director of Public Health in Gateshead, on the television this week. She spoke of her concern that Gateshead has the second highest number of  new Covid cases in the UK as of the week ending 1st October with 286 new cases and an infection rate of 141 cases per 100,000 people. She urges us to be prudent in our behaviour especially if we have any cold or flu like symptoms particularly a cough, when she hopes people would wear a face covering if they are in a crowded situation. She also spoke of how the rate of hospital admissions is rising. There were 307 new cases in the week leading up to 8th October. So please think of others in the choices you make.
