Never permit me to be separated from you. Amen

Prayer for our Country

Almighty God, Ruler of all the peoples of the earth, forgive our shortcomings as a nation, purify our hearts to see and love the truth, give wisdom to our leaders, and steadfastness to our people, and bring us at last to that city of peace whose foundations are mercy, justice, and goodwill, of which you are the designer and builder; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Our new Parish Priest

Fr. Patterson was able to announce last weekend that Bishop Stephen has appointed Canon Martin Stempczyk as the new parish priest of St. Alban’s, Pelaw and St. Patrick’s, Felling. He will reside in St. Patrick’s Presbytery and will move to Felling towards the end of the week beginning Monday, 2nd September. Fr. Patterson will be leaving us on Tuesday, 3rd September to take advantage of his retirement in the Sacred Heart Presbytery, North Gosforth. Please keep them and one another in prayer in the weeks ahead so that we may continue to be guided by the Spirit of the Living Lord.

Father Joseph O’Brien

We offer our prayerful congratulations to Joseph who was ordained to the priesthood on Saturday, 20th July in St. Mary’s Cathedral, Newcastle. He will spend his summer assisting Canon Paul Douthwaite in Hartlepool before returning to Rome to complete his Canon Law studies.

Mission Appeal

We have been unable to host a visit from the Comboni Fathers to make their Mission Appeal in our parishes this year. As such, we will have a retiring collection for their work in both churches next weekend 3rd/4th August. Please note this is a retiring collection and baskets will be offered for your donations as you leave the church.

A Tour of our Cathedral

The Newman Tyneside Circle invites you to a guided tour of St Mary’s Cathedral, Newcastle (with particular attention to the stained glass windows, including the new Kevin Nichols window). The tour will take place on Tuesday, 6th August, at 2pm and will be followed by discussion and refreshments.

Prayer for the Fourth World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, 28th July, 2024

Lord, faithful God, you who created us in your image, you who never leaves us alone and who accompanies us through every season of life. Do not abandon us, take care of us and grant us, once again, the ability to discover ourselves and recognise that we are your children. Renew our hearts with your Word. Do not allow anyone to be cast aside. May your Spirit of love fill us with your tenderness and teach us to say: “I will not abandon you!” to those we meet on our journey. With the help of your beloved Son, may we not lose the taste for fraternity and may we not conform to the sadness of loneliness. Help us to look to the future with renewed hope and make the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly a day without loneliness and a day abundant with the first-fruits of your peace. Amen

Using your car on behalf of the parish

The Diocesan Health and Safety Officer has asked us to make parishioners aware of the following:-

If a driving related task is being completed by a volunteer on behalf of a parish, it is highly recommended that the volunteer informs their car insurance provider of their voluntary role.  A suggested approach a volunteer might make with their car Insurance provider where they are completing a task on behalf of the parish might be as follows:-

I engage in some purely voluntary activities for my local church for which I am not reimbursed in any way. (Two examples follow) (a) Every fortnight, I am asked to collect two fellow parishioners from their homes and transport them to our Church and back home after the Church service. (b) Each week I transport collection money from my church, which has been donated during the previous week, to the local Post Office. I would be grateful to know if my voluntary role needs to be noted by you against my current car insurance policy.

If their response is that you need to pay an additional premium, ask for a quote as to what the additional cost would be and if you feel it is unreasonable for you to pay, please inform your priest or Health and Safety representative. Terry Harbron is the representative for St. Alban’s and Joanne McShane is the representative for St. Patrick’s.

If your role is purely voluntary and not formally arranged by the parish the need to inform your insurance would not apply.

Gift Aid Scheme

Are you aware that if you are a UK tax payer and make an offering to our church collection you could join the Gift Aid Scheme enabling our parishes to gain an extra 25% of your offering, at no extra cost to you. If you feel you could be a part of the Gift Aid Scheme, please email the Parish Gift Aid Organiser, John Gillum at stpatrick.giftaid@outlook.com for further details or have a word with Fr. Patterson.

Your offerings are our sole source of income

A Night out with Family and Friends

We would like to invite you to a Family Night Out in St. Patrick’s parish centre this Friday, 19th July from 7pm. Admission is free and we ask you to bring your own refreshments. The proceeds of the evening will go towards the cost of replacing the “range/cooker” in the centre kitchen which is no longer functioning. Sea Sunday

Seafarers and fishers play a vital role in all our lives often working in difficult and hazardous conditions. This Sunday is “Sea Sunday” when the Church prays for those who live and work at sea. On this day we are asked to support the work of Stella Maris (the Apostleship of the Sea) which is the official maritime charity of the Catholic Church. With the many ports in our Diocese, the work of the Apostleship of the Sea is extensive and does sterling work. If you who wish to make a donation towards their work it may be placed in an envelope marked “Sea Sunday” and deposited in the collection boxes at our church doors. Those of you with boxes of envelopes should have an envelope in your box.

All are welcome

Everyone is welcome to join us for our celebrations in St. Patrick’s and St. Alban’s churches. It is a joy to welcome people of other faiths or none who come to join us in worship. Currently, only baptised Catholic people are able to receive Holy Communion and we ask that when you approach the altar you extend your hands towards the minister who will place the sacred host in your hand which you should then consume immediately before returning to your place. If you are not a Catholic or are indisposed to receive Holy Communion, you are invited to come forward at the appropriate time and receive a blessing, indicating your desire by folding an arm across your chest.

If you are bringing your child(ren) up for a blessing at Holy Communion, would you please ensure they cross their arms over their chest before approaching the minister to avoid any possible confusion. Thank you so much.

School News from Mrs Robinson

At this time of year, we begin preparing our school children for change as they move into new classes. New starters for Nursery and Reception class have visited, all children have spent the morning with their new teacher in their new classroom, and our Y6 children will all have been to their new secondary school for a couple of days. This week, we invite parents into the Year 2 classroom to pray with their children as they ‘Jump into the Juniors’. Children always look forward to growing up and getting older, and being in the Juniors (or Key Stage 2 as it is now called) is a big event. Please continue to pray for all of our children as they grow and experience change in their lives.

A call to our parents

If you are bringing your child(ren) up for a blessing at Holy Communion, would you please ensure they cross their arms over their chest before approaching the minister to avoid any possible confusion. Thank you so much.

New Lectionary for Mass

On the first Sunday of Advent, 1st December, 2024, the Lectionary, which is the book that contains the Scripture Readings for Mass and the celebration of the Sacraments, is changing as part of the continuing process of revising liturgical translations, which began with the Roman Missal in 2011. The new Lectionary will use the English Standard Version – Catholic Edition of the Bible and the Abbey Psalter for the Psalms. The changes are intended to make the biblical translations more faithful to the original languages and where appropriate, more inclusive. Each parish will need to purchase a new set of Lectionaries, which is composed of four volumes at a cost of £695.00 per set. (£173.75 per volume). Fr. Patterson is very aware and greatly appreciative of your most recent generosity, but should anyone wish to contribute towards the cost of these Lectionaries please place your donation in an envelope marked “Lectionary” and deposit it in one of the boxes at the church doors over the next couple of weeks. Thank you for a donation of £50.00 which was received last weekend.

Property Repairs

One of the Diocesan Property Team came to visit St. Patrick’s during the week, at Fr. Patterson’s request, to investigate water ingress into one of the attic rooms of the presbytery; to inspect water seepage in the entrance to the parish centre; to re-examine “bowing” in part of the boundary wall and to view remedial work which needs to be done to the finials on the presbytery roof. It will involve having to erect scaffolding to access the roof in an attempt to discover the cause of the water ingress and to point the finials. Costings for the work will be obtained on our behalf by the Property Department. You will, I feel sure, be pleased to learn that overall the property both At. St. Alban’s and St. Patrick’s is deemed to be in good condition.

Diocesan Vision – A message from Bishop Stephen

Dear Sisters and Brothers, in order to grow as a synodal Church, it is important that we all have a chance to pray and discern how the Holy Spirit is inviting us to grow in mission in our parishes and communities. To facilitate this, I, together with others, offer an initial Diocesan Vision for your prayerful reflection. Our discerned Diocesan commitments are: To Walk with Jesus and Enable Others to Encounter Him; To grow as One Diocesan Family- Rebuilding Relationships; Forming and Developing People for Mission; Living Justly and Caring for Our Common Home. Each of these commitments is developed in the Vision. It is not my intention to impose this Vision. It is offered for further reflection and I invite all of our parishes and communities to prayerfully reflect on them. With assurances and prayers, + Bishop Stephen.

If you would like to engage in meeting to discern how we can respond to Bishop Stephen’s important invitation, please email the parish office at felling.stpatrick@rcdhn.org.uk or speak to Terry or Christine Harbron, Tricia McGinley or Kevin Rhodes.

May the Lord continue to bless us all as we journey together in his name.

Mobile phones

If you are attending any services in St. Alban’s Church or St. Patrick’s Church you are asked to ensure that your mobile phones are “turned off” as silent mode is not always silent. Please be considerate of each other at all times. Thank you.

When you are unable to celebrate Mass in Church, you may wish to make this act of spiritual communion:-

Lord Jesus, I believe that you are present in the most Blessed Sacrament. I love you above all things and I desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace you as if you were already there and unite myself wholly to you. Never permit me to be separated from you. Amen

Please keep in your prayers:

  • all our parishioners who are sick, housebound or in hospital
  • and all those whose memories we cherish at this time

School News from Mrs Robinson

The children and staff at school have had a very productive and fun-filled half term. Next week is our half term holiday and then we return for the final half term of the academic year. It promises to be packed with lots of learning and exciting activities as we live up to our mission statement to ‘live life to the full’.

Our Partnership Update

St. Alban’s and St. Patrick’s are part of the John Ingram Partnership. Regular meetings are held with clergy and lay representatives to discern ways in which the Catholic Community in our local area can work together and support each other. At the May meeting Fr. Patterson was thanked for his many years of service in the Partnership and wished a long and happy retirement. In this time of change for many of our parishes, we encourage patience and understanding. We must continue to support our priests and pray for them; and work hard to encourage and develop our faith communities. The Partnership Group will meet again in September. The Partnership representative for St. Alban’s is Terry Harbron and Alan Egdell is the Representative for St. Patrick’s.
